So Here's the Fans

What is up with America and their sports?  My teammates and I decided that we’d go have lunch at this sports bar down on 2nd Street called Legends today just to hang out and see what new places we can indulge at.  I’m not really a local “Long Beacher” so this was my first time going to this place, and I was immediately taken back when I walked in through the doors.  There were televisions, literally, everywhere!  Not just small TV’s here and there; there was monster size flat screens covering the walls.  The main screen was a projector that covered the entire wall, which was playing the USC vs. Washington game.  Everyone’s eyes were glued to one television, or other’s would go back and forth glancing at one TV, then another game on the opposite wall.  The guest wore their favorite team’s jersey, and there was even one guy that had his face painted.  Then I thought to myself, “Why do we surround our days and even our lives around something we have no control of?  Why are we so committed to supporting a sports team that we have no relationship with?” American society is so intrigued by watching one team tackle each other; or another team’s pitching speed, but for what?  To go home happy or sad, knowing that “your” team won or lost?  It really has no effect on our lives, just our feelings.  I can’t even judge, because I know how it is when my Anaheim Ducks hockey team loses.  I become sad for the rest of the day; my whole day is influenced by whether my team does good or not.  I don’t know, this kind of things amazes me.

  1. I have never thought about it this way, but it is so true! We literally have no control over these sports teams we are obsessed with, and yet, we let their win or loss either make our day or ruin it. And we may have gotten players' autographs or taken pictures with them, but we don't really know them! Everywhere I go I see people in jerseys, sporting their favorite team. I even have a few myself, I will admit. Thinking about it, though, makes it seem a little bit silly. We base a lot of our lives on these teams, though I have never really thought about it!

  2. Ha ha! Yeah, I've never really thought about it either until I walked into the sports bar. When you deeply think about it you go, "Woah, humans are really weird". But we just never notice it because we have our own personal teams that we support. It was so funny, my little 12 year old sister is a really big Anaheim Ducks fan.. like REALLY BIG, and we were watching the playoffs last season and they ended up losing. I look over at her and she was BALLING her eyes out! I was like, "Delaney, it's okay they still have next year!" She goes, " I know, but they worked so hard this season!" She was so emotional about the whole thing. So even at a young age, Americans get so attached to their sport teams!
