What ever happened to Saturday morning cartoons? The all-American show of the 90’s that every little kid anticipated all week for; like the mischievous ‘Rugrats’, the ups and downs of ‘Hey! Arnold’, the life of ‘Doug’, the odd and weird “CatDog’, the crazy adventures of’ The Wild Thornberries’, the action of ‘Rocket Power’, and even the imagination of ‘KABLAM!’ I just remember waking up just before 8 A.M. to pour a bowl of lucky charms, and sit on my pillow in front of the living room television. Little joys like this really makes me think of my childhood and how simple it was. These cartoons were the highlight of my week. If Nickelodeon decided to play this shows again, I could probably recite all the shows and still enjoy them as much as I did then. Kids now are interested in ‘Hannah Montana’, ‘Jonas Brothers’, and ‘Teen Mom’. I feel as if the old cartoons really brought me up in life to be imaginative and to remember where I came from. They kept me young and showed me to take my childhood slow; to not rush into growing up. Looking back on it now, I wish I can still be a little kid with my little bowl of cereal sitting ‘criss-cross applesauce’ on the floor looking up at Tommy and Angelica as happy as can be.

I remember all those cartoons too! I loved CatDog, Doug, Hey Arnold, Rocket Power, Wild Thornberries... the list goes on and on! I totally agree with you on how those cartoons made us all happy to be young! These days, I see little girls thinking they are Hannah Montana or the cast from Camp Rock, and it makes me sad because at that age, all I wanted to do was play outside and/or with my Barbies! Ha Ha - Still, I do miss watching all those cartoons and sometimes they will randomly pop up in my head. I'll think about the good days watching Saturday morning cartoons in pajamas. Great post :)
ReplyDeleteDude, i swear I was just thinking about this last weekend! Where have all the great cartoons gone? It seems like kids today are more interested in following the latest trends. Trust me, I have two baby sisters and I love them and all but they drive me crazy with all their Jonas Bros. and iCarly crap. They take solace in watching a show only because their friends think the show is good and admiring teen pop idols than actually connecting emotionally with a show. That was actually, I think, what separated current cartoons with the classics. The current ones are mainly eye-candy and are geared to a more comedic audience. The classic ones, although very very funny at times, had an emotional aspect to them. They were only animations, yes, but they could make you cry, make you happy, make you angry, and sometimes all at once. Reading this made me actually go on YouTube and search episodes of Hey Arnold! haha. But yes, I do miss classic Nickelodeon. I'm just happy that our generation was able grow up with these amazing shows and I believe it really helped us grow as children.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree Rico! I have a little sister too, who is 12 now and I feel like she's 16 by the way she acts. I went home recently to visit her and my older sister, and I come to find out that she has a boyfriend! I was like," At that age, I didn't even like boys. When one called me cute, I would hit them and say 'EWWW!'" I don't know, I just think that society now wants all the kids to grow up and have the image that they should all be stylish and grown up like Miley Cyrus. It’s pretty upsetting, but I am glad we grew up in the era that we did! These shows were the best!
